Netflix will launch in the UK in early 2012

Online movie streaming service confirms assault on UK market

US online movie streaming service Netflix has revealed it will launch in the UK early next year.

The service, which has not been given an exact date for a UK launch, allows web users to watch an unlimited number of TV shows and movies on a number of internet-connected devices including computers, internet-connected TVs, games consoles, smartphones and tablet PCs for a monthly subscription charge.

Netflix, which has been available in the US since 2007 and was subsequently rolled-out to Canada and 43 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, didn't reveal how much Brits would be charged to access the service. It currently costs £7.99 (£5) per month in the US.

Brits can register their interest on Netflix's site and will receive an email when the service is close to launch.

There has been much speculation as to whether the online streaming giant would make an assault on the UK market. In July this year, Variety said sources close to European film distributors had revealed the film-streaming service was planning an assault on both the UK and Spanish markets in early 2012. Netflix declined to comment at the time however.

When Netflix does launch it will be competition against  LoveFilm, a movie rental service that delivers films via the internet or on DVD through the post. It was purchased by Amazon in January this year. Furthermore, Netflix could also be seen as a rival to TV-on-demand services from the like of Sky, Virgin Media and BT that already allow users to stream movies.
