E-book author uses digital platform to raise money for war veterans

Proceeds will benefit Ex-Servicemen’s Association

An author of books set during World War I is donating the proceeds from digital sales of his two novels to The British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association (BLESMA). The charity has close links with the Help For Heroes campaign.

Allen Makepeace is the pen name of non-fiction writer Johnnie Johnson. He is donating 75 percent of the sale price of the two e-books written under his nom de plume to the charity, stating ”Each of these books is cheaper than a pint of beer, but it can help the heroes of our time.”

Johnson aims to sell 2,000 digital copies of his novels and says he will increase the donation level to 85 percent for any sales above and beyond this amount. The books are published in a choice of digital formats that can be read on a PC, laptop or tablet screen as well as e-book readers such as the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader.

The e-books, ‘And Such Great Names as These’ and ‘Winter Hunt’, are being sold through independent publisher Smashwords and cost $4.99 (£3.10) each, meaning around £2.25 from each e-book sold will be given to the charity.

The former novel is set during World War I, with much of the action taking place on the eastern front. It was originally published in 2007 and was declared the best novel of the year by The National Association of Writers’ Groups. Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Julian Fellowes and poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy OBE are all patrons.

E-book sales have gone from strength to strength. In May The Publishers’ Association reported that the UK e-book market was worth £180m annually.
