Channel 4 3D broadcasts start tonight

The Paul O'Grady Show kicks off week-long event

Channel 4 will broadcast its first ever 3D programmes in the UK tonight.

The Paul O'Grady Show at 5pm tonight will kick off the week-long event, which also includes a documentary on the Queen featuring memorable colour 3D clips of events in her life, as well as a magic show by illusionist Derren Brown.

Channel 4 announced plans to start broadcasting in 3d earlier this year. The broadcasts will use ColorCode technology that makes the programmes look normal when viewed by the naked eye. They only gain depth when viewed through amber and blue filters in special glasses that are available through the supermarket chain Sainsbury's.

The broadcaster has trumped Sky, which said in March it hoped to start broadcasting 3D shows to consumers by Christmas this year. However, it has not issued a firm date since.

Sky has already tested broadcasts of a number of shows in 3D, including a live concert by indie band Keane, it has yet to set a live transmission date.
