BBC begins HD trial on Freeview

Guildford area first to get Freeview HD content

The BBC has begun transmitting high-definition (HD) programmes on Freeview as part of a trial of the service.

Although a BBC HD channel is available on Sky and Freesat, this marks the first HD content available through Freeview and it can be accessed by anyone receiving programmes broadcast by the Guildford transmitter.

The trial uses the new DVB-T2, which is claimed to boost transmission capacity by nearly 30 percent. However the technology is not compatible with current Freeview set-top boxes.
