Freeview HD - the free high definition digital TV service - will start broadcasting in December.
Residents in Manchester and Liverpool will be the first in the UK to receive HD broadcasts via the Winter Hill transmitter on December 2nd.
Roll out of Freeview HD across the rest of the country will follow the Winter Hill launch, the BBC said.
"There are another four main transmitters that we plan to upgrade in the first half of 2010. We can give the names and dates of these transmitters in a little while when plans are a bit firmer," said Graham Plumb, head of distribution technology at the BBC.
"We are also planning an upgrade to the Digital UK postcode database, which will tell viewers when they can expect their transmitter to be upgraded to Freeview HD."
The roll out follows a trial of Freeview HD transmissions in the Guildford area, which commenced in July last year.
