80% of UK households receive digital television channels

But London lags in race for digital TV switchover

The UK is currently in the process of the digital television switchover, which is scheduled to be completed by 2012. Latest government figures show the numbers of UK households ready for the digital TV switchover.

The Office of National Statistics reports that Scotland is the most ready of all the countries that make up the UK, with 89 percent already receiving digital TV. Wales is second, with 83 percent. England comes in third at 80 percent. And Northern Ireland limps in at last place with a far-off 67 percent.

In the regions, households in the North West of England had the highest digital television take-up with 87 percent - with London surprisingly the least ready at just 75 percent.
