Out go the Fender-wielding axe men and in come the computer nerds.

A recent survey from NOP has revealed that it is tomorrow’s techies, not future pop stars, who are the coolest kids in the class.

Once discarded as social pariahs, the schoolroom geek is now regarded as "friendly and fun" by his peers.

The same survey showed that over the past 18 months the number of seven to 16 year olds using the internet has doubled to four million.

"Kids really do know more than their parents and teachers. The expert in the family is, typically, a boy aged 14-16 and he knows all there is to know, from games to porn sites,” said Barbie Clark, director of NOP Family group.
