Lastminute.com is defying the trend of scaling down and cutting back.
The British online vendor, which offers last-minute deals on travel and entertainment tickets and the like, this week launched in Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
There were some delays, however. The sites were originally due to go online in the third quarter of last year.
"We postponed the launch because we were waiting for an entirely new web site architecture to be finished," said Alexandra Jankovich, managing director Lastminute.com Benelux.
The new architecture is capable of handling high user volumes and offers personalisation, Jankovich said. All of the company's sites are now backed by the new system.
"We are the number one travel site in Europe and the number one most-visited retail site," she said. Amazon.com is Europe's number one electronic retailer, according to Jankovich.
