On Tuesday next week Handspring will unveil a colour version of its Treo handheld device. The Treo is a handheld computer with a built-in mobile phone, but until now has laboured with a paltry monochrome display.
UK pricing for the new 270 model will be announced next week but US pricing is $499 with service, $699 without service, $100 more than the monochrome version.
Although the internals are similar, there are differences in the external dimensions with model 270 model slightly thicker than the 180 to accommodate the colour circuitry.
The 270 also includes a backlit display for both the keyboard and screen. The 180 only uses a backlit screen.
In the UK the Treo line is currently only availabe on the O2 mobile network, using GPRS (general packet radio service).
Published reports also indicate Handspring will unveil a Treo organiser model without wireless capability. This has led to speculation that the Visor line of handheld organisers will be discontinued at some point in the future.
Calin Pacurariu, product line manager for Handspring, would not acknowledge the rumors but did say that Handspring's focus is on the Treo.
