The convergence of mobile phones and personal digital assistants continues with the US release of Handspring’s VisorPhone add-on.

A UK version of the module, which turns Handspring’s Palm clone Visor into a mobile phone, should be on the shelves before summer 2001.

Handspring couldn’t say exactly when the UK would see the VisorPhone, but a spokeswoman for the company confirmed “it is on its way”, with the middle of next year being the target.

The VisorPhone is to retail at $299 plus mobile contract in the US, and tradition dictates a pounds-for-dollars translation of this to the UK market.

In the US this add-on is being seen as a voice call enhancement for a PDA, but in the UK and the rest of Europe it will doubtless be marketed on its mobile computing capabilities.

But whether a GSM add-on will work out for the Visor, with (relatively) high speed GPRS phones coming on-stream by next summer is unclear.
