AOL customers have been jamming our phone helpline with complaints about its new internet upgrade software.
When customers installed the new AOL 6.0 upgrade CD, they expected to have a range of new internet features at their fingertips – including instant messaging and enhanced email.
But instead the disc knocked out their internet connection, preventing users from surfing the web.
“We’ve been inundated with calls from people with problems after they’ve installed the software," said a technical support advisor at PC Advisor’s helpline. "The only way they can get the connection back is to uninstall their web browser and the disc and then reinstall from scratch."
Most of the problems so far have been encountered by customers using Microsoft's Internet Explorer as their browser.
AOL denied this was as bad as it seems. “We’re not aware that this is a general problem,” a spokeswoman for AOL said. She denied suggestions the problem could be due to a compatibility problem with Internet Explorer. “That is absolute nonsense. Internet Explorer is an integral part of 6.0 software.”
