Apple releases faster, greener MacBook Pro

Apple notebooks with latest Intel Core 2 Duo

Apple has updated its MacBook Pro notebooks with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Apple MacBook Pro memory has been boosted to 4GB, and high-speed graphics have been added to Apple's notebooks. The new Apple MacBook Pro is available in 15in models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17inmodel with an optional high-resolution display.

All Apple MacBook Pro models include a built-in iSight video camera, Apple's MagSafe Power Adaptor - the plug shord that safely disconnects when under strain - and built-in 802.11n wireless networking.

Every Apple MacBook Pro model includes an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB of shared L2 cache, an 800MHz frontside bus and 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory. Apple says the Apple MacBook Pro runs pro-level applications such as Final Cut Pro 6 more than 50 percent faster than the original (Core Duo) MacBook Pro. Each model also includes an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip, which is more than 50 per cent faster than the original MacBook Pro's chip, according to Apple.

The MacBook Pro's lightweight, aluminium enclosure is just 1in thin and is available in three models: 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz 15in MacBook Pro models, and a 2.4GHz 17in MacBook Pro model. The new 15in MacBook Pro models feature a brand-new, power-efficient LED-backlit display and are the first of Apple's notebooks to transition to LED backlighting as part of the company's effort to eliminate the use of mercury in its products.

The 17in model now offers a new optional 1,920x1,200 high-resolution display, providing over 30 per cent more screen real estate than the standard 1,680x1,050 display.

The new MacBook Pro also includes Gigabit ethernet, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 port, a backlit illuminated keyboard, an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking, and a DVI video output.

The 2.2GHz, 15in MacBook Pro costs £1,105 (US$2,194) plus VAT, while the 2.4GHz model costs £1,360 plus VAT. The 2.4GHz 17in MacBook Pro is priced at £1,530 plus VAT.
