Philips has developed a technology it claims will make homemade CDs better quality than those pressed in a factory.
CeBit preview: DIY CDs more reliable, more durable
Philips will unveil its thermo-balanced writing technology at the CeBit technology show being held in Germany this week.
TBW optimises the burn process and ensures the integrity of data written to CDs. The technology can analyse a blank disc and determine the optimal recording speed based on the typical heat profile during the writing phase.
"It's a self-learning process and the system will remember the best burning circumstances. In 95 percent of the cases burning at the highest speed is possible. If there are problems the speed will be adjusted," explained Benno Tieke, senior scientist for storage physics at Philips Research Laboratories.
TBW will feature on all Philips CD-R and CD-RW drives. Philips will also introduce a 12-speed TBW rewriter at CeBit.
TBW doesn't mean copies of music CDs will sound better than the originals, but it does mean the more clumsy among us will have fewer Homer Simpson moments.
"Homemade discs will be more durable," Tieke said. "[They] will still be readable when bent by heat or damaged by humidity and will also play in poor quality drives."
