Sony gives it both barrels

CeBit preview: Two beams equals finer screens

Sony has developed an ultra-high definition system that should give the same on-screen resolution for CRT monitors as will pop out of a laser printer. The onscreen resolution of around 500dpi should look almost identical to what is printed.

Gravuretron technology (snappy name) should be introduced at the CeBit, the European technology show held in in Germany next week. Higher-definition Sony monitors may be on sale as early as this summer.

The system uses two electron beams to get an onscreen stripe pitch of 0.15mm, compared to the finest achieved so far of around 0.22mm.
