Inspiron goes superslim

Dell inches into lightweight laptop arena

Dell has announced an inch-thin Inspiron notebook computer that uses a low-wattage Intel microprocessor.

The Inspiron 2100 weighs just over 1.5kg and comes in a 25mm deep magnesium alloy case. Processing power comes from a 700MHz Intel PIII Speedstep processor.

In the US the new Inspiron clocks in at $1,899 - one of Dell's most expensive notebooks. It comes with a 12.1in (307mm) XGA screen, 64MB of memory, a 5GB hard disk drive, integrated 56K modem and 10/100 Ethernet card and an ATI Rage Mobility M graphics card with 4MB of video memory.

The 2100 will be available from the Dell website by Friday, a company spokesman said.

Optional external media bays include a floppy drive, 24-speed CD-ROM, eight-speed DVD, 20-/4-/4-speed (read/write/rewrite) CD-RW, Zip 100, and secondary 20GB hard disk drives.
