You will get your PlayStation2s

Sony promises to double production of console

Parents who've spent weeks consoling (no pun intended) children about the lack of Sony PlayStation2s can take heart. Sony announced this week it's planning to double production of the console.

The company plans to produce 20 million PS2 consoles between this April and next. Many would-be PS2 gamers in Europe were unable to purchase the console in December because of production problems which led to shipment delays.

Sony has shipped only nine million PS2s in the last year, a million less than expected. Less than two million of these are in Europe.

Sony has also outlined its plans for linking PS2s and original PlayStations to the internet and each other. Among these was the company's first application, Check-i TV, which will link the PS2 and other consoles with Japanese telco NTT DoCoMo's mobile telephones, the devices that use i-Mode.
