BT is set to cut 200 jobs from its consumer broadband ISP BTopenworld.
A BT spokesperson confirmed one fifth of the workforce from Btopenworld would be cut. BT refused to say why, other than issue the following dazzlingly strange statement:
“[Most] start-ups need to assess their staffing levels after 6 months or so,” said a spokesperson for BT. “Many people are needed initially to get the business up and running.” Odd, considering how many companies start out small and then grow.
The cuts come shortly after BT was slammed by Oftel for dragging its feet throughout the 'local loop unbundling'. [see one of our previous stories]
BT denied staff were being moved to Ignite, the BT ISP that provides those prized broadband wholesale ADSL connections. “This is categorically not the case,” said BT spokesperson.
“All staff are being redeployed,” said BT spokesperson. “We are not prepared to say where, at this time, but just that they will be absorbed into other lines.”
