Toshiba planning to launch PDA

Notebook leader gets a handle on handhelds

Toshiba is planning to launch a personal digital assistant (PDA) in Europe, the US and Japan.

The company has a sound reputation in notebook PCs where it is the market-leading manufacturer. On its launch this summer the Toshiba device will enter a market hotly contested by Compaq, Sharp, Casio, Palm, Handspring, Sony and others.

Details of the new product, which is still at the planning stage, are yet to be decided, said company spokeswoman Yumiko Kokubu. However, Microsoft’s PocketPC is tipped to be the favoured operating system for the device.

Toshiba may also be looking to link with Siemens in marketing the device in Europe. The two companies formed an alliance late last year to design and develop next-generation cellular telephones. Such a move was one of a number of possibilities Toshiba is currently evaluating, said Kokubu.
