Apple and Compaq to provide movie making kits for the desktop

DVD-R drives could provide PC with latest killer app

Apple and Compaq are looking to move consumers up to the next stage of home computing, offering them the ability to record and edit films onto DVDs via their PCs.

The new computer systems, complete with their new DVD-R drives, aren’t just attracting the attention of nervous film studios. They will also give users the ability to make audio DVDs.

Warner Music has already launched the first DVD audio titles, heralding a historic shift from music CDs to DVDs, which – because of their immense storage potential - can be enhanced with the inclusion of music videos, games and other interactive content.

In the US next week Apple is expected to launch a new range of Power Macs complete with DVD-recording capablity.

Again in the US, Compaq this week unveiled a Presario consumer PC primed with a combo DVD/CD recordable/rewritable drive.

According to industry experts DVD recording could provide the PC with a much needed killer application. Both Apple and Compaq suffered disappointing sales figures over the Christmas shopping season, blaming waning enthusiasm for computers from consumers.

DVD-R discs will initially sell in the £10 range, while DVD-RW discs, which allow the user to record to disc more than once, will go for twice as much.
