Intel canes Athlon with launch of 933-MHz PIII

CPU nears 1-GHz performance

Further evidence is emerging that Intel has well and truly turned the corner.

For once it is AMD that is sweating with Intel’s latest 933MHz PIII processor administering a sound spanking to AMD’s top of the range Athlon running at 1GHz.

In fact the new processor, which has racked up impressive benchmarks in the PC Advisor labs, could even provide Intel’s own top of the range 1GHz PIII chip.

Though the 933-MHz Pentium III launched today (24 May), amid considerably less hype than surrounded Intel’s 1-GHz chip in March it performs almost as well--and 933-MHz systems should cost less, as well as being available in more plentiful supply.

Intel is also pushing vendors to use the 933-MHz PIII with its dual-CPU 840 chip set.

Computers used for complex financial analysis or highly graphical Web material can benefit from dual processors, says Intel spokesperson George Alfs.
