BT reaches mobile deal with AOL

AOL Anywhere to appear on Genie

In an effort to make "AOL Anywhere" more than just a slogan, AOL has aligned itself with BT.

AOL wants to reach more of those who access the Internet with mobile phones.

The deal would put AOL mobile Internet services on BT's Genie mobile portal, the second largest in the UK.

Until the deal was announced, AOL was alone among major European ISPs in its lack of a relationship with a major telco.

The alliance is seen as crucial in building a European audience for AOL's mobile services.

"AOL needed a partner in terms of wireless and WAP," says Dan Stevenson of Jupiter Research.

Genie had 439,000 unique visitors in November and a 3.5 percent total reach in the UK according to MMXI Europe.

The UK's largest mobile portal is operated by Breathe, which, ironically, has just become this country's latest dotcom victim.

Breathe had 511,000 unique visitors on its mobile portal in November, and a 4.1 percent reach.
