Death machine fetches £17,000

Electric chairs for sale on eBay

Online auctioneer eBay is causing controversy once more after hosting the sale of an electric chair used to put 125 people to death between 1916 and 1960.

The owners - the state of Tennessee - got £17,000 for 'Old Sparky,' which came with its original electrodes and leather straps.

Bidding stopped after 40 offers when the auctioneers received hundreds of objections on the grounds of poor taste.

Edward T Meyer, vice president of Ripley Entertainment, is now the proud owner of the chair.

He intends to make it part of a crime and punishment exhibition at Tennessee Museum.
