NEC to build fibre cable between India and Sri Lanka

Scheduled for completion Q2 next year

NEC will install an undersea fibre-optic cable between India and Sri Lanka, it said on Monday.

The company signed a contract with Sri Lanka Telecom and Bharat Sanchar Nigam to construct the 320km telecommunications cable, which will be called the Bharat Lanka Cable System.

Installation work is scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of next year, and the cable will offer an initial capacity of 40Gbps (gigabits per second). It will be expandable to 960Gbps should demand increase, NEC said.

In addition to linking the two countries, the cable will provide links from India to other destinations in Asia, Europe and the Americas, because Sri Lanka serves as a gateway point for several other undersea telecommunications networks.
