Intel beats revised estimates

Chip maker reports quarterly profits of nearly £2 billion

Intel might be losing ground to rival AMD in the speed stakes but the processor giant still rules the roost when it comes to making money.

After warning last month that demand for PCs in Europe would weaken third-quarter earnings, Intel yesterday reported a profit of £1.98 billion and record quarterly revenue of £5.95 billion.

Profit was up 52 percent from the third quarter of 1999, but down 18 percent from the second quarter of this year.

On 21 September Intel warned that expected third-quarter earnings would be lower mainly due to weak demand in Europe. http://www.intel.com/.
