Apple/Motorola iTunes phone, iPod mini details

The future’s flash

Apple plans to migrate its iPod mini range to flash memory, but most likely will not announce the move this week, a report claims.

ThinkSecret predicts upgrades to the company's iPod mini and iPod shuffle products, but speculates that news on these will be deferred to follow the unveiling of Motorola's iTunes phone this week.

That device will offer either 256MB or 512MB of flash storage for tracks taken from an iTunes library.

The report also predicts the device will be able to buy songs over carrier networks.

Reuters reports that Apple's purported German mobile carrier, T-Mobile, has undergone a sea change in its attitude to music downloads.

T-Mobile has its own music download service, but admits to no longer believing in a "walled garden" approach to customers.

"Our strategy is no longer to offer one product and tell our customers, 'take it or leave it'," a T-Mobile spokesman said.

"Those who want to use [mobile jukebox] can go there. Those who want iTunes can go to iTunes."

The iPod mini is expected to have a colour screen and to ship with up to 8GB capacity, while the high-end iPod shuffle will offer up to 2GB music storage, the report claims.
