Microsoft to reissue Windows 2000 SP4 update

Small number of downloads have caused problems

Microsoft plans to re-release Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 due to several problems with the current version.

Microsoft has had several million downloads of the SP4 update rollup since its 28 June release, but are witnessing problems with ’a small fraction’, according to Peter Houston, senior director of servicing strategy for Microsoft.

Some of those problems involve making connections to servers running Citrix and compatibility with third-party security software, according to information posted on Microsoft's website about the update rollup.

As a result of these issues, the company published information and guidance on this site to help users address problems. It will post a new version of the update rollup soon. Microsoft has not disclosed a specific time frame for the availability of the re-release.

In the meantime, Microsoft will not remove the current SP4 update rollup from its Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update, and advised users to read the information provided on the site to see if the problems will affect them. If it will, Microsoft is advising them to wait for the new software packages, according to Houston. If not, they should download the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 that is currently available.
