Dixons to ditch 35mm cameras

RIP 35mm, long live digital snappers

Dixons Group, the UK's largest consumer electronic retailer, is ditching 35mm analogue cameras in favour of the now dominant digital breed.

According to the retail giant, which last year famously canned VCRs, digital cameras now outsell analogue cameras by 15 to 1.

The decision to ditch 35mm cameras, marks a pivotal moment in the history of consumer electronics. Dixons originally cut its teeth on the high street selling analogue cameras, with sales peaking at 2.9m in 1989.

Now a spokesman for the chain has recently described the product category as "increasingly niche".

Airport branches, however, will continue to sell some specialist 35mm cameras to cater for professional photographers.
