Domain name registration exceeds 30 million

Expected to double in next two years

The number of registered domain names has smashed through the 30 million mark bringing further pressure to bear on Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which is currently working on a range of new suffixes.

As of yesterday the number of registered domain names stood at 30,272,862 and is expected to double over the next two years.

It took a decade to clock up the 30 million figure.

The bottleneck caused by the very limited number of suffixes will hopefully be alleviated by Icann, which is receiving multiple bids from various consortia hoping to rent out names ending with .pro, .kids and .info.

Icann is warning opportunistic industry watchers not to try and register any of the new suffixes until formal ratification takes place.
