ICANN gets pitches for new top-level domains

Clogged Web could soon get .kids instead of .com.

Dot-commers may be passe, but how about dot-dotters?

The .dot extension is one of hundreds of new top-level domain (TLD) names proposed to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organisation handling the expansion of suffixes.

ICANN is expected to announce the list of new suffixes 20 November, which will mark the first major growth in ten years.

The most popular suggested domains are .biz and .kids, with four separate applications each.

Applicants were not averse, however, to taking advantage of very profitable internet pornography businesses, with three applications for the .xxx domain and one for .sex.

Forty-seven applications from companies, consortia or organisations produced more than 200 potential new domain names, at a fee of £35000 apiece.

The applicants would control registration of the domains and take in fees to cover the cost of administration.
