Digital signatures get smart

Post Office pushing e-signatures

Internet start-up company UK Smart is teaming up with the Post Office in a move that will offer free digital signatures to millions of customers.

The initiative is intended to bolster public confidence in conducting transactions over the Internet.

Founded by venture capital groups, UK Smart will leverage the Royal Mail brand to boost support for legally acceptable digital signatures, offering e-business security through the Post Office's 18,000 outlets.

Customers will be able to walk into any Post Office branch and certify their digital signatures for use in e-commerce.

Consumers still unwilling to give credit card details over the Web can also pick up vouchers for conducting Internet transactions.
