Although we’ve covered plenty of MFDs recently, they’ve all been built around inkjet technology. This new Samsung model, with its laser technology, is the odd one out.
It’s also one of the most compact yet. Add to that a relatively modest price tag (by laser standards) and you have a potentially interesting product.
You only get mono laser printing at this price, but if text is your main priority then this’ll prove an excellent acquisition. Even at the highest resolution of 600x600dpi, the Samsung can generate 11ppm (pages per minute). And the text quality is excellent, with dark clearly defined characters.
The Samsung scans with full 48bit colour, but the maximum resolution is a meagre 600x600dpi and times are slow. It requires just over a minute to generate an A4 scan at 300dpi, for instance, and more than four minutes to produce one at 600dpi. Results, though, are perfectly satisfactory.
If printing text is your priority (with a little scanning thrown in), the performance and low running costs of the SCX-4100 make it a good choice.
