EBay embraces music downloads

Sellers must hold copyright or permission to auction

Online auction giant eBay intends to trial a digital-music download service later this year.

A company spokesperson said: "eBay is conducting an 180-day pilot in the music category with pre-approved sellers of downloadable digital music files."

During the experiment only pre-approved sellers will be able to list in eBay's Digital Downloads category. eBay will evaluate the project after 180-days, and "determine whether to enable other copyright owners or resellers of downloadable media to list in eBay's Digital Downloads category".

The company reveals that "approved sellers" in the pilot scheme have represented themselves as being the rights owner or of holding contractual permission from the owner to resell listed media.

"Downloads bought through eBay will take place in the secure environment of the seller. During the checkout process, the buyer may be redirected to a separate, branded and secure site to complete the transaction and to download the purchased music," the company reveals.
