UK company claims streaming video breakthrough

Brits lead the world on quality video over ADSL

London-based Snell & Wilcox, makers of digital image processing equipment, has teamed up with the Californian company Equator Technologies to develop a streaming-video technology.

The duo is claiming a first on delivering better-than-VHS image quality at bandwidths of less than 1 Mbps (bits per second).

The companies announced the product in a statement this morning, timed to coincide with the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam.

The product will allow broadband system operators to offer video programming via a set-top box at half the bandwidth of competing technologies, the companies claimed.

This should mean more choice and higher quality for consumers. They added that the technology will for the first time enable "quality video" over existing ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) links.
