UK CD-ripping service launches

Less than a quid a CD

A new service for iPod owners offering to digitise existing CD collections called En-Code will launch here in the UK next month.

The service is ideal for iPod owners with huge CD collections who find themselves cash rich yet time-poor.

En-Code charges £0.99 per CD to encode the discs into MP3 format. The service will collect the CDs a customer wants encoded, and will categorise those tracks. The MP3s will be returned on a DVD, or the music can be placed directly aboard a customer's music player (on request).

In a launch promotion the first 100 people to register for the service can have up to 200 CDs each encoded at no charge and also qualify for a discount on using the service when it launches in May. The service will be introduced across Europe in the following months.

En-Code promises a "typical turnaround time of between 3-5 days". Large collections (500+ CDs) may take longer.
