The dual in the crown

DVD-R packs 8.5GB

Just when you thought you’d got the measure of the DVD formats thing, yet another variation enters the fray.

Philips has been demonstrating its technological prowess with a preview of its newly-developed dual-layer DVD-R disc. Dr Wim Koppers from Philips’ Research showed how a laser was able to lay down data on first one layer then, due to its transparency, burn data on the second layer on the same side of the disc.

It will launch a drive, the eight-speed internal DVDRW885K, capable of recording to double-layer, single-sided DVD+R media across Europe in April. As with the double-sided recordable DVD produced by other companies, Philips’ twice-the-capacity discs will be able to store as much as 8.5GB of data – equivalent to four hours of DVD video or 13 data CDs.

A 16-speed internal drive will be launched in July, costing 199 euros inc VAT and bundled with 16-speed media.

Philips is a member of the DVD Alliance which subscribes to the +RW recording and rewriting standards. However, with hedge-betting on the most likely recording standard to win the day now the norm, the dual-capacity internal PC drives will also be able to read and write DVD-R/-RW discs too.
