Sony Ericsson to offer RealPlayer on European phones

One in the eye for Microsoft

Sony Ericsson Mobile is to include RealNetworks RealPlayer RealAudio and RealVideo capabilities on its mobile phones in Europe.

The RealPlayer mobile technology will be included alongside the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) streaming technology, which Sony Ericsson already offers on many handsets, according to Sony Ericsson application planning manager, Susanna Bill.

The company has not yet announced when phones will be available with the technology, as it will depend on how the market develops, according to Bill.

Using phones with the RealPlayer mobile technology, consumers will be able to download music and video files to their handsets. The content will either be provided by RealNetworks or by operators. "Our main business is building handsets, so we will not have any commercial content services ourselves," she said.

Sony Ericsson has also joined the Helix community, a group of developers and interested companies working with RealNetworks on the Helix DNA media technology, the foundation for RealNetwork's products. Helix DNA is an open, multi-format platform for digital media creation, delivery and playback.

RealNetwork's mobile technology can now be used on handheld devices running Linux, Openwave Phone Tools v7, PalmOS, Series 60, Symbian and WinCE operating systems, the companies announced in a statement.
