BT reaches 1,000 upgrade milestone

Telco registration scheme branded a success

Quick to recognise its own achievements, BT has given itself a pat on the back for upgrading 1,000 exchanges as part of its 'world leading' registration scheme.

The scheme has attracted more than 700,000 registrations since July 02, pushing the number of houses connected to a broadband enabled exchange up from 66 percent to 85 percent. This figure is set to reach 90 percent by the summer.

But many PC Advisor readers are still experiencing problems connecting to broadband exchanges. Reader Mark Harrison's connection was dropped without explanation, leaving him with useless broadband equipment and no idea of when he would be able to reconnect to broadband, if at all.

However, lucky residents of Needham Market in Suffolk, the 1,000th exchange to be upgraded, will be able to hook up to broadband in the next few weeks.

Trigger levels have now been set for 99.6 percent of exchanges. The remaining 600 exchanges are the smallest in the UK, serving a very limited number of homes. Other telcos in France and Australia are now carrying out similar registration schemes with the help of BT.
