Parents reap net benefits

Government launches online safety week

Parents Online, an initiative by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to educate parents about the benefits and dangers of the internet, today announced the launch of its Parents Online Safety Week set to run from 10-14 November.

The week will see libraries, schools, colleges and other institutions organising events for parents in a bid to increase awareness of how to support their children using ICT, addressing safety issues over using the internet.

A poll on the group's website shows parents are more computer savvy than they have perhaps been given credit for. A massive 59 percent of respondents said they were ahead of their children when it came to using and understanding the internet, while 15 percent rated their child at about the same level as themselves and just over a quarter (26 percent) said their child's knowledge was ahead of their own.

"There is no doubt that the internet is an amazing resource for families and we believe that if parents have more knowledge of what is available online, they will embrace the technology as a learning tool for the whole family," said Margaret Hodge, minister of state for children, young people and families.

Teddington Library will offer free safe surf classes on 12 November. Twickenham library is running family workshops from 11 November to show the whole family how to use the internet safely, while Lincoln's central library learning centre is providing a week of free online access and giving parents the chance to enrol in thousands of online courses. A full list of events can be found on the Parents Online website.
