It's not the first time online gaming has been used as a reason to upgrade to broadband and it certainly won't be the last, as BT yesterday announced a venture with console giants Sony and Microsoft.
BT will be offering all new broadband customers a router/modem and games package for online gameplay. The telco hopes that by targeting the gaming generation it will be able to meet its rather optimistic target of five million broadband subscribers by 2006.
But perhaps the most important point that came out of the announcement is the company's definition of broadband.
"For clarity, BT's definition of broadband is a connection of 500Kbps (kilobits per second) or more. Some other providers are currently claiming midband connections as broadband and these are not able to provide the same internet experience for customers," said the company in a statement.
BT's online marketing spiel for its broadband services does not state the actual speed, instead offering a download rate up to "10 times faster" than ordinary narrowband connections (56Kbps).
Sony and Microsoft expect 1.4 million consoles will be connected to the internet by this time next year.
