Charity Digital Links today called on companies to donate redundant IT equipment as part of its scheme to provide computers to under-privileged communities in the developing world.
The charity converts cast-off PCs, laptops, monitors and other peripherals into useable equipment for people in developing countries, following in the footsteps of charity Computer Aid International. It covers all legal, privacy and environmental requirements, leaving the businesses that donate equipment with no additional responsibilities.
"There is so much potential in the developing world if people are given a chance to realise it," said Sir Peter Judge, chairman of Digital Links. "Our aim is to use information technology to help unlock that potential."
As recycling requirements under the Weee (Waste Electric and Electrical Equipment) Directive draw nearer, charities are labelling such schemes as cost effective disposal methods for businesses.
