Easynet rolls out broadband

Those communities still missing out on broadband could be one step closer to high-speed internet access today after ISP Easynet launched a scheme to get local exchanges upgraded in line with public sector demand.

The Easynet Exchange Enable, dubbed E3, works on a trigger level basis similar to BT's, but with one crucial exception: instead of targets of between 200-300 registrants per exchange, only 10-25 public sector connections — from schools and hospitals, for example — will be needed.

The ISP is one of six providers chosen by the government earlier this year to supply broadband to the public sector. The scheme will tap in to the government's controversial £1m piggybank towards broadband deployment.

Easynet will install its own equipment on BT exchanges to offer its broadband services over the local loop (the last few metres of copper wiring).

"Broadband Britain needs to be built fast, but on solid foundations. We've worked with the public sector to provide a sustainable business model to achieve government targets for broadband locally in both the public and private sectors," said David Rowe, CEO of Easynet.

"By working with Easynet, public sector organisations take the lead in bringing a wider and higher quality range of broadband services to support their local business communities, as well as working towards their own targets for e-government and service delivery," he added.
