Move over Palm

All change for the handheld giant

PDA maker Palm is set to join the long list of companies that have changed their names over the years, today announcing plans to rename its hardware division to PalmOne following the anticipated spin-off of its operating system (OS) business PalmSource later this year.

The handheld company is focusing increasingly on converged handheld devices, aided by its proposed acquisition of rival Handspring.

Palm announced its intention to buy its largest competitor back in June, saying it planned to merge its Palm Solutions Group with Handspring to form a new company with a new name. That business, now unveiled as PalmOne, will encompass Palm's Zire and Tungsten brands, as well as Handspring's Treo line after the acquisition, Palm said.

In order to reap the benefits of the Palm name, both the OS and hardware division will keep the Palm brand — the former owning 55 percent of the entity according to reports.

The company has already launched its PalmOne website at http://www.palmOne.com, although the brand name is not due to appear on handhelds until 2004.
