Fusion Drive can now be added to entry-level iMac

If a lack of Apple's new Fusion Drive was pushing you towards a more expensive iMac, you may want to take pause. As first reported by MacRumors, Apple's now offering the new storage system as a build-to-order option on its entry level desktop.

The 1TB Fusion Drive, which combines solid state storage and a conventional hard drive into a single seamless volume, costs $250 when added to the $1299 21.5-inch iMac--the 3TB Fusion Drive remains the province of the 27-inch iMac.

Our own lab tests of the Fusion Drive found that it performed many operations with speeds close to that of a pure solid-state storage.

Of course, if DIY is more your speed, you can always create your own Fusion Drive by combining a hard drive and solid state drive with a little bit of Terminal know how.
