Slimline PCs

Pelham Sloane goes for compact

Consumers who fancy trading in their old tower PC for something a little more space-saving might be interested in computer designer Pelham Sloane's PS1500 PC, launched today.

The computer's innards have been integrated into a 7in thick flat-screen monitor, eliminating the need for a bulky tower while maintaining fairly impressive performance speeds.

The 15in screen houses a choice of Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz, Intel Celeron 1.8GHz or Via 933 C3 processors, up to 1GB RAM and a maximum 120GB of hard disk space. There is a wide range of optional extras to choose from including a touch-screen, infrared capabilities and an onboard TV card.

"Previous attempts to create all-in-one machines sacrificed processing speeds or storage capacity — or were too bulky to confer a space advantage. PS targets a sweet spot in the market by providing space savings, ergonomics and style associated with LCD screens, and full desktop processing power without a tower," enthused Bart Stanco, senior vice president of research firm Gartner.

Prices will start from £849.99 plus VAT. The company is also developing 17in and 20in screen models for introduction later this year.
