iMac with Retina Display to launch in October, sources

A new hi-res version of Apple's iMac is entering production this month and will launch in October, apparently

Apple is developing an iMac with Retina Display, and the new model is set to launch in October, according to a report.

Sources have revealed that a new hi-res version of Apple's iMac is entering production this month and will launch in October, according to DigiTimes.

According to DigiTimes, which publishes a lot of rumours that are often unfounded, Apple intends to expand the Retina Display across all its product lines.

The report notes that other PC manufacturers are not planning to add Retina Displays to their products because they are expensive.

According to our report from last week - No Retina display for new iMac, sources - the iMac may launch with a higher-resolution screen, but this may not be a true Retina Display. As we outlined in that report, as screen sizes get larger, the graphics card requirements also increase. For example, the 27in iMac currently has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 - the Retina display resolution on that model would need to be 5,120 x 2,880, although it has been suggested that to qualify for the 'Retina display' definition the resolution would only need to be 3,840 x 2,400 if Apple used 'pixel doubling'.
