Linux looms large for Europe

Open-source software boom predicted

European businesses just can't get enough of Linux-based kit according to a survey by analyst IDC.

It says the market for Linux desktops and servers is set to boom thanks to the appeal of the affordable software and the growing support for this platform among leading vendors.

IDC's figures show that 15.5 percent of European businesses are considering Linux-based desktops, while the market for Linux servers is set to triple in volume and double in value by 2007.

The announcement of Sun's low-cost Linux PC, which is due to ship in the next few months, twinned with database giant, Oracle's decision to offer support for open-source users, is fuelling this growing enthusiasm.
