Elgato has announced the launch of the Thunderbolt SSD - a solid-state drive that is compatible with the ultra-fast Thunderbolt technology - at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Elgato Thunderbolt SSD will launch in February and combines solid-state flash memory, which is faster and more durable than a traditional hard drive as it has no moving parts, with the Thunderbolt interface which can transfer data in each direction at speeds of up to 10Gbps.
It doesn't need a separate power supply as it draws power through the Thunderbolt port and is housed in a metal enclosure. It comes in two capacities - 120GB and 240GB.
Over the past year, Apple has introduced Thunderbolt ports in a number of its product ranges including the MacBook Pro and iMac.
One of the drawbacks of SSD technology, though, is that it doesn't come cheap. The Elgato Thunderbolt SSD will cost £349.95 for the 120GB version and £569.95 for the 240GB version.
