Apple may not be planning to discontinue its Mac Pro range after all, with clues in the Mac OS X 10.7.3 beta pointing to a possible refresh for the line.
MacRumors picked up on an observation made by Netkas about the OS X 10.7.3 beta, where new video drivers for an upcoming AMD graphics card codenamed 'Tahiti' can be found.
Rumours suggest that Tahiti will be a range of 28nm desktop graphics cards that will be known as Radeon 7XXX and come with Pro and XT models, to be launched in January. As the Mac Pro is the only Mac that actually supports desktop graphics cards, some commentators have taken the inclusion of drivers for Tahiti cards as evidence of a new Mac Pro.
However, there are a number of reasons why this might not be the case - there have been several rumours that Apple was actually planning to discontinue the Mac Pro line, for a start. Add to that recent reports that Apple is set to dump AMD and return to nVidia as its graphics chip supplier.
As MacRumors points out, just because Apple has been working on a new Mac Pro - and there is evidence to suggest it has - it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be released.
The Mac Pro line was last updated in July 2010.
