Centrino comes of age with three new processors

Intel heralds success of mobile chip by beefing up Wi-Fi security

Intel's latest mobile processor, Centrino is fast winning supporters among the PC makers, according to the company's latest figures. It says that since its launch in March the number of systems using the chip has almost doubled from 34 to 58, and that by the end of the year it anticipates over 125 devices will be Centrino-powered.

To meet this demand it is introducing three new processors to the Centrino line-up: a top-speed 1.7GHz model, a 1.2GHz low-voltage version and an ultra-low-voltage 1GHz unit.

The chips will also feature improved security to ensure safe wireless data transfer. Later this month Intel plans to introduce support for the latest enhancements to wireless LAN security, including Wi-Fi Protected Access. WPA was developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to increase the level of data protection and access control for both existing and future wireless LAN systems.

Intel has also worked to ensure that Centrino devices offer worldwide compatibility; the standard now works with 14,000 hotspots around the globe.
