Mac OS X Lion to be available for $32 in Australia

The latest upgrade for the Mac OS X operating system, OS X Lion, will be available in Australia through the Mac App Store some time in July for $31.99. The OS X upgrade will only be offered as a download through the Apple online store -- Apple has confirmed to PC World Australia there is no planned standalone retail release for the new OS.

Officially announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Mac OS X Lion is claimed to be the easiest OS X upgrade yet. Apple also says the 4GB download shouldn't impact significantly on users' download quotas, claiming it is similar in size to a standard length HD movie from the Apple iTunes Store. The operating system's server component, Mac OS X Lion Server, will be a separate download from the Mac App Store and will be available for $51.99.

Any Apple customer that buys a Mac after June 6 will be eligible for a free upgrade to OS X Lion, and will be able to redeem this upgrade for 30 days after the release of OS X Lion. Like the current Snow Leopard operating system, Mac OS X Lion requires an Intel-based Core 2 Duo or Xeon, Core i3, i5 or i7 Mac with at least 2GB of RAM to install.
